#dailyorbit: Big investment plays could soon be happening in the world’s wealthiest sports league.  🏈 Private equity is continuing its expansion into professional sports. Currently, they are eyeing the National Football League (NFL), the world's richest and the last major North American sports league to open to institutional investors, according to Financial Times. Following other US leagues, such as the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Hockey League (NHL) and Major League Soccer (MLS), a committee of NFL team owners have been discussing the structure of funds and the restrictions that would be placed on investors. An inside source mentioned that “one requirement being explored by owners is the stipulation that institutional investors set up NFL-specific funds”. US professional sports team valuations have risen dramatically in recent years, driven in part by rising media rights contracts. Private equity has recently shown an increased appetite for sports investing. For example, many firms already own stakes in European football clubs, such as Chelsea Football Club, Atalanta B.C. and Sporting Clube de Portugal. #dailyorbit: Blackstone is setting the stage to build one of Europe's largest data centres. The private equity heavyweight is close to acquiring the former Britishvolt industrial site in the north of England, according to The Financial Times. Blackstone would then likely try to persuade one of the tech giants to become a tenant for the site, setting up their computer hardware inside the centre. The deal relies on key approvals and local support, but, if successful, it could create about 4,000 jobs. Fueled by the AI-driven surge for computing power, there’s a growing interest to invest in data centres. Indeed, Blackstone already acquired US data centre group QTS for $10 billion in 2021. “The data centre construction boom continues globally, with supply struggling to keep up with record demand,” Green Street analyst David Guarino wrote in a note, cited by Financial Times. 💬 How might private equity shape the future of global tech infrastructure?
